Folks living in St. Johns County have a hard time staying off of the water, when the famed St. Johns River runs right by you. Get your start on the water today with the simple and fun practice of kayaking. Use these helpful tips from Mpora to get your kayak adventure started!
Choose Your Kayak
It might surprise you, but different kayaks serve different purposes and work in different ways for different people. A sit-on-top kayak has you sitting on top of the boat, and is easier to navigate for newer kayakers. A sit-in kayak allows for better control and serves as a better protector from the sun.
Wear a Life Jacket
They may look a little silly at times, but a life jacket really can keep you safe, no matter what happens. Make sure to always wear a life jacket when out on the water— it may save your life.
Practice Proper Kayak Posture
Like how golf and tennis have a proper swing and a proper stance, kayaking has a proper posture and a proper paddling technique. These ensure that you can sit comfortably, put as much power in your paddle as you can, and paddle in the direction that you want to go. For your posture, remember to sit up straight and keep your knees slightly bent. For the paddle, hold the paddle having both of your hands shoulder-distance apart, align your knuckles with the paddle blade, and make sure that the concave part of the paddle is the one dipping into the water.
Bring Extra Clothes
Whether you’re in a sit-in or sit-on-top kayak, you might get wet! That’s part of the fun of kayaking, but you’ll want to dry off near the end. Bring a spare change of clothes just in case, and always remember to put your phone, keys and wallet in a waterproof bag.
Remember to Have Fun
Starting kayaking can be a little nerve racking, but the important thing is to remember to stay safe and have fun. Enjoy looking for animals that live alongside and in the water, catching glimpses of beautiful sunsets and sunrises, and enjoy the warm sun on your shoulders.
St. Johns County is inseparably entwined with its nature, especially the St. Johns River. It’s hard to not find some way in which the people here have incorporated it into their lives, especially through kayaking it. You’ll find that one of the closest relationships regarding the waterfront is between the St. Johns River and RiverTown.
