As the old adage goes, “experience can be the best instructor.” Everything from our daily activities to new things that we try gives us information, ranging from whether we enjoyed trying something new to the sensations that we felt when we did it.
Childhood is when the young brain develops and absorbs every bit of information it can, which is why so many parents work to access programs and amenities that are, if not educational, informative for children. Designed to be multimodal, RiverTown was for families to spend time together, experiencing new adventures and life.
Fine Motor Skills
If you have kids in preschool through kindergarten, you may have seen these words often! These are the skills that kids use to do everything from hold a ball without dropping it, grip a pencil, or respond to external stimuli, such as a balloon popping. They affect everything from handwriting to driving, and the earlier that you work on them, the better. You don’t need repetitive drills or expensive classes to develop fine motor skills – RiverTown has so many options for kids to apply them!
The Mosaic Class held this November lets kids make their own work of art following in the traditions of Greek mosaics. To make these mosaics, they’ll draw out a plan for what they want their mosaic to look like, cut straight lines into paper, and glue decorations where they want them. If your kids are looking to get their dance on while working on fine motor skills, the Marytime Music Classes are a must. Meet at the RiverTown Dance Studio every Thursday to join other parents and their kids as you dance, sing, and play the time away. It’s more than just making noise-as the kids grip a scarf, wave a streamer, and play a beat on an instrument in time to the music, they’re working on the fine motor skills that they need to navigate the world.
It’s no secret- exercise is good for you! Kids who exercise frequently at a young age are more likely to describe themselves as happy and healthy, and are more likely to develop good habits early in life. However, between your busy work schedule and your kids’ commitments to school, homework, and clubs, you and yours probably don’t have enough hours in the day to get a run in or join a sports team. The good news is that RiverTown’s multiple outdoor offerings, from kayaking to outdoor volleyball, are plentiful-all the reason to get outside!
Older children will appreciate the structure and discipline needed to execute the positions in karate. Classes are offered every Wednesday and Thursday from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M., and teachers from Pak’s Karate will show students the proper moves and stances. As kids move through the activities and programs, they develop confidence and self-assuredness, as well as physical strength. As for younger kids who may have a hard time sitting still, let them stretch their restless legs at the Tot Lot! Found right by the RiverHouse, it’s the perfect spot to run, chase, climb, and swing your way to a healthy lifestyle. Meet up with friends to chat and watch the kids play outdoor games and socialize with each other, or go solo and let them burn some steam for a few hours after a busy day at school.
These skills are so important to a child’s growth and development, especially at a young age. Whether your kid is a social butterfly or not, it’s vital for them to learn how to make new friends, set boundaries for themselves, and how to get along with others. This is where events such as the Winter Festival come in. Held at the RiverClub, there’s going to be dancing, music, games, and of course, all of your kid’s closest friends. In this environment, they’ll work on taking turns at the party games, sharing snacks and time on the activities, and communicating their wants and needs with each other. Have them invite their friends over for a playdate at the Pirate Cove tot lot or the RiverClub pool for more social skills fun. Here’s where they’ll practice taking turns jumping over the water spouts and express what games that they want to play, while you take some social time with the parents. To make it a perfect day, bring a picnic lunch with some snacks for everyone-it’ll be sociable of you.
Learning doesn’t stop the minute that your kids put down their books and leave the classroom. The people that your kids hang out with, the things that they do for fun, and the experiences that they have all work to inform and educate them. That’s what makes St. John’s County so great for families. Even Forbes and Greatschools.org took notice and placed the county on their list of “Best Cities To Live and Learn” for 2011. The secret is in the schools’ approach in fostering each student’s academic career and supporting their extracurriculars. This makes for a healthy work-life balance that creates happy kids and smart students. Throw in St. Johns County’s small-town lifestyle and wholesome atmosphere, and you can see why many families are working to live as close to St. Johns County as they possibly can. Fortunately, one neighborhood in the county doesn’t just put families close to some great schools; it also creates a great environment to raise children in.
